Cleaning melted material off of exhaust

Postby gorilladan » Wed Apr 08, 2009 12:21 pm

It finally happened- melted plastic on the pipes. I've heard many different opinions on what works best to get it off. What do you all consider to be the safest method???
Thanks!

Heat the pipes and remove with any good solvent. Do NOT use anything abrasive!

Oven cleaner, like easy-off - just make sure you don't get it on anything else.
I've also been told when all else fails you can use #000 steel wool (super, super fine) but I can never bring myself to try it.

I have had great success with this method.
cut a piece of 1/2" copper pipe about 6" long.
flatten one end in a vise, then file the flat end to remove any burrs.
now you have a scraper that you can use to remove the plastic off.
Chrome is harder than copper, and I have removed melted rain gear from the top of my rear pipe a couple of times
using this method. I have taken care each time not to get too aggressive, just in case. But have yet to see any form of scratching.
Just wish I'd remember that jeans dry easier than removing rain gear from my pipes

I also forgot that I used RTV gasket remover once. Permatex makes this stuff, it's designed to remove RTV silicone gasket material from surfaces and it eats just about anything. You have to make sure and protect the rest of the bike from overspray, but it works pretty well.

I just had this happen a couple of week ago. I went on a ride for MS, it was 31 degrees when we started out. Yes I was F'n cold. When we stopped I tried to warm my hands by my exhaust but I touched the blessed things and left plastic and whatever all over it.
When the bike cooled it wouldn't come off. I heated the bike up took a clean rag and wiped. I was luck cuzzz it all came of minus some residue, and that came off with....I think it was Goo-be-gone or whatever the stuffs called.
