Coolant issue??

Postby yfx4 » Sun Aug 24, 2014 5:12 pm

Riding my new to me 1999 Valk this afternoon. It is about 95 degrees. The temp light came on for aabout a minute, then went off. The fan works...... in my driveway anyway. The reservoir tank is full but when I look in the radiator I do not see any fluid.

This bike got superficial TLC. The brake and Clutch fluids were chunky and black. I doubt the cooling system got better care.

Any ideas? Should I just top off the radiator and mmake sure it works before replacing the coolant?

Sorry about the duplicate threads.

Any pros or cons to using just any silicate free coolant? (Type 2 I think)

I'd fill the system like you would if you had just flushed it, including burping and cycling it to ensure that you get as much air out as possible. Obviously there was a problem somewhere for it to get like this. I would also clean/check the rad cap as a bad cap may prevent fluid from being drawn back into the system. Lastly, check all your hoses - the coolant had to go somewhere. After filling it, keep an eye, you may start finding spots under the bike...

As for which silicate free coolant, I've used both Honda pre-mix and Prestone 50/50 pre-mix if I just need to top off. If I'm filling a whole system I buy one gallon of Prestone (green stuff) and one gallon of distilled water and mix my own. I normally have distilled around anyway for other stuff, so it's not like I'm making 2 trips to save a couple of bucks either. Depending on your situation, you might decide to just buy the 50/50 and save yourself the trip for the distilled water separately.

Cool. The reservoir is over filled. There are no drip marks around the water pump or lower hose. I have read the upper hose clamp can come loose so will check that once full.

Good idea about the cap.

I will also check the rad. drain bolt. This thing apparently sat a while and if that is loose/leaking the coolant could drip there too.

edit----as I thinkabout it.....a bad cap would push fluid into the reservoir and not suck it out. Makes total sense.

I think I will use one of my handy-dandy 60cc syringes and transfer coolant from the reservoir to the radiator. Top it off and test my new radiator cap.
