Clutch Problem

Postby keeper » Mon Oct 26, 2009 3:43 pm

I'm running a Barrnett Clutch, It's been in the bike for around 50,000 miles no slip, hooks up when i need it. The bike started creeping forward when i would stop and made it hard to shift sitting still. Had to turn the bike off to find neutral. I diid a fluid change about a month ago, no change in the operation of the clutch. I rebuilt the Master first thinking it was M/C bleeding by. When that didn't work I rebuilt the slave and change fluid completely again. Still no change in operation. It will partially disengage. You have to hold the front break to keep the bike from moving forward. You can feel a little bit of resistance at the end when you pull the lever. (Sluggish)

While it doesn't directly discuss your problem, this thread here:

viewtopic.php?f=86&t=965

might also enlighten you a bit if you have any questions about the clutch and it's operation.

Now, to directly discuss your problem - have you checked the brass bushing in your lever? The bushing wears over time, and it might be something you didn't consider replacing when rebuilding everything else. Outside of that, you can rule out anything hydraulic since you've rebuilt that entire system. If the bushing isn't your issue then I would open the cover and check everything in there. The fact that you have disengagement issues rules a lot of simple things out.

I think it's safe to assume that 50k miles of smooth operation rules out installation problems, springs, shims, etc...

More than likely a broken spring ..that would let the pressure plate be slightly crooked when disengaged so it wouldnt release properly

Thanks Bare for the info and the site. Spoke with Big Larry eailer and determined I need to go into the right side of the motor and check for the sheared rivet thing or broken springs in that Barrnett Clutch. I'll keep ya'll posted on my finding for the future.

I thought about broken springs but was thinking primarily about pressure on the clutch pack, I didn't think about binding from a broken spring...
I agree on the possibility of the sheared rivet, but I'm not sure that broken spring(s) would do this without exhibiting other problems...

Let me know what you find. ;)

Okay guys got the clutch out. Springs are fine. The basket rivets are broken like the ones in the other post. Need a replacement basket. I'll look in Hondas OEM parts and see if Hal has it. :wall:

Re: Clutch Problem - Broken rivet heads

Postby mhowe » Mon Oct 09, 2017 2:06 pm

Can you help me by telling me where this part is? I have the right side case opened up, clutch plates out but the clutch carrier basket still installed. Is it behind the basket?
I found 2 broken rivet heads, I just can't see where they broke away from.

Also, tried to find out how to contact Bareass to buy the parts. Got a wrong phone number off Facebook.
Thanks for all the super helpful information. I want to buy the parts from you in thanks for all the free advice you provide!!!
