My new Project...... CB750 Cafe Racer

Postby Swampy » Sat Jan 02, 2010 10:11 pm

Bare came over today to check my progress and asked me to post up a thread with some pics ..
Hope you guys enjoy....

It all started when a friend of mine bought this...
CB750 K
Image

He slapped some paint on it and rode it around for a while..
Image

The tank started leaking so he swapped it out and changed the exhaust..
Image

Then sold it to me...

I decided to make it a Cafe Racer so I pulled off the bars and replaced them with Clubman bars..
Image

Then I decided to repair the dents and stuff in the tank and get rid of the honda emblems.
Image

Slap on some primer..
Image

Then I mocked up a cardboard seat cowl..
Image

Decided on House of Kolor Cobalt blue Metallic
Image

Image

I made a license plate mount out ....
Image

I am currently decideing between a Mac 4 into 1 header or a Kerker 4 into 1
This is the Mac.
Image
Kerker looks like this..

Image

While Im deciding .. I did a few more things..

Disassembled the shocks and painted them..Cut off the tail section..
Image

Bought a set of spoke rims and mounted my new front tire.
Image

And took off the stock gauge cluster ..
I mounted a single speedo and drilled holes in the headlight to mount the indicator lights
Image

Thats about where Im at right now... I should have the new rear tire Monday, and get it mounted up..
I have the side cover , the valve cover gasket and the oil pan off of the bike right now.. But Im going to get them mounted back up tomorrow.. (Except for the side cover I need a new gasket for it) But Monday it will be a rolling chasis again..
Ill post up some pics when I get it back together and get it out of my garage again...

I had a '71 and a '72 Honda 750/4. Made the '72 into a chopper in '75. Sold it in '88. Solid as a rock. It was the one bike I never wrecked(lol). Never thought about making one into a cafe'.

Looking good, is that a new (used) cowl or what? I thought you said you were having to get one custom made?

It is custom made. It started with my factory seat pan and some cardboard then a guy picked it up and converted my cardboard to wood and fiberglassed it...

Pre fiberglass...
Image

After fiberglass but pre gelcoat...
Image

I didnt do that work so I didnt post the pics.. LOL..

Got my cowl in yesterday.. Painted it up last night..
Image

Then mounted it today..
Image

Had some coil issues so I swapped the stock coils out for GM dual tower DIS coils..
crappy cellphone picture sorry..
Image
Stock coils only put out about 15,000 volts ... The GM DIS coil puts out about 40,000
so I added some new NGK plugs... Gapped at .42 instead of .21 and threw on some new wires,
Image
Man oh man, this thing is running about 500 times better...

I am very happy with it... I took it for a short shakedown area (about 20miles) and it was perfect... No issues at all...
So thinking I might make bike night Wednesday... Bare you coming????

That is looking awesome man, I mean really good.
Weather permitting I would LOVE to ride this week, give me a call between now and then and we'll iron out the details. Looking forward to seeing it and riding, the cold and rain have been keeping me indoors more than I like lately.

Bike looks great though, looking forward to seeing it "in action". ;)
